Is this your first time walking the Camino? Well, there are some items that you'll want to be sure to have right when you first set off. You'll be glad you have them.
Backpack (30-45L)
A lightweight, well-fitted backpack with padded straps and a hip belt is vital. Look for one with a rain cover and compartments for easy access to water and snacks.Comfortable Hiking Shoes
Well-broken-in, water-proof hiking boots or trail runners are essential to prevent blisters and foot pain. Also pack a pair of lightweight sandals for the evenings when you are settled in your albergue to let your feet rest from the boots. (Most albergues make you leave the boots at the front entrance anyway, so you need alternative footwear).Lightweight Sleeping Bag or Liner
Depending on the season, a light sleeping bag or silk liner is useful when staying in public albergues. Many albergues provide a simple fitted, disposable sheet, but many do not. You'll be happy to have something to place on the bare mattress.Quick-Dry Clothing
Pack versatile, moisture-wicking clothes: 2-3 shirts, 2 pairs of pants/shorts, 3 pairs of socks, and underwear. Include a fleece and a rain jacket or poncho for warmth and weather protection. Many albergues have washing facilities and some even have driers, but not all. Many pilgrims hang their clothes out to dry or even attach their damp clothes to the backpack while walking to dry them out.Water Bottle
Staying hydrated is crucial. A reusable water bottle is preferred over hydration bladders for convenience. Recommendation: gets hooks to be able to attach your bottle to your backpack!Trekking Poles
These help reduce strain on knees during long walks or steep sections, especially on routes with varied terrain.Quick-Dry Towel
A compact microfiber towel is practical for showers and dries quickly. Most albergues do not have towles, so you'll want to bring one.First Aid Kit
Include items like blister treatments (e.g., Compeed or moleskin), pain relievers, and any personal medications.Pilgrim Credential (Camino Passport)
This is required to stay in albergues and to collect stamps along the way, which are needed to receive the Compostela certificate at the end. The American Pilgrims on the Camino offers a credential service to provide that to you before you depart to Spain. If you begin at Saint Jean Pied-de-Port in France, it is also possible to obtain one there. Otherwise, it is advisable to have the pilgrim credential before you arrive to Spain.Headlamp or Flashlight
Useful for early morning starts or navigating albergues at night without disturbing others. Depending on the time of year and the time of the morning you set out, it will be dark! Having a light is essential to find your way until day breaks.
These items will definitely be helpful to have right when you get started.
